Assignment #3:

QRI-5 is an individually administered informal reading inventory used in grades K-12. It's designed to provide information about conditions under which students can identify words and comprehend text successfully. It can also be used to provide information to identify student's instructional levels and to determine which areas of reading students are having difficulty with. Furthermore, it assists teachers in finding exactly which reading level their students are at. Based on the results, the teacher can decide how to group students for guided reading sessions, or choose appropriate books for literacy circles and independent reading.

DIBELS is a series of tests that assess early childhood literacy in grades K-6. It assesses the acquisition of literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It's more specific than QRI-5. A main point of DIBELS is that each assessment is timed for 60 seconds. When the timer beeps, the student stops whatever he/she was in middle of reading or sounding out. Afterwards, based on how well the student performed, and if the learning goals were met or not, the teacher decides if extra support is necessary. These assessments are done at 3 benchmarks per year. Those students that require extra support must be assessed between benchmarks as well, to determine that progress is being made.

  2. How are theses two instruments different? If I needed to use one or the other, what would determine this? One is K-6 and the other K-12.

    1. It depends why the assessment is being done. If it's to identify exactly where the student is holding, and if he/she is holding at the proper benchmarks, than DIBELS is the right tool. However, if it's to see a broad picture of where the student is holding, and which intervention strategies are necessary, QRI-5 is the right choice.
