Week #7

I assessed a girl by the name of Rachel, a 1st grade student. I modeled what I would like her to read, and then she copied me, while I assessed her.

Her Print awareness was fantastic! I asked her to point out the following features of the book:
  • Front & back of the book
  • Title of the book
  • Where we begin reading from
  • A letter & a word
  • The first & last word of a sentence
  • The first & last word on a page
  • Punctuation Marks
  • A capital & lowercase letter
She scored 100%!

Her Phonological & Phonemic awareness was pretty good. She knew the alphabet and all the different sounds that the letters and combinations of letters make. When asked "how many phonemes do you hear in the word ________?" she had a hard time with quite a few.
I would play the phonemic awareness games with her, suggested at readingrockets.org. Next, I would do some more practice words with her, and give her some to do at home as well. Lastly, I would re-do the assessment the following day to ensure improvement, and to help her further.

When assessing her Phonics, she was proficient with the most common single-letter graphemes and digraphs. She also mastered the short vowel spelling patterns, and was able to sound out most of the words I gave her. She was able to read and spell letter name and letter sounds in isolation. She was also able to read words sound by sound, and whole words, only sounding out when she was unfamiliar with the word, or made an error. Additionally, she was able to read short decodable phrases, sentences, and a short passage.

Her Fluency was not great. However, I do not think this is a problem, as she is still young, and is not expected to have 100% independent fluency skills as of yet. Her reading was OK, however a bit choppy at times. She only read with expression when she understood what she was reading from beforehand. That proved to me that she needs practice with her fluency, which will lead to her comprehension, which will automatically increase her expression while reading. In order to help Rachel, I would read aloud for her, and have her read the same passage a few times over. Through doing this, she will master the art of fluency, and become a fluent and expressive reader.

To help Rachel using online tools, I would use readingrockets.org, edpuzzle.com, and education.com.
These are 3 great websites that have great videos for students to watch, as well as read alouds, where students can follow along with the reader.
