Week #11

Teaching students about text structure knowledge is a great way to facilitate their comprehension of expository texts. Readers of all age must be aware of text structure in order to comprehend and to be successful. Students who are aware of text structure and the way text is usually formatted are likely to be more successful than those who don't have this knowledge. Having this knowledge can help readers locate and organize information within the text. Furthermore, the elements in expository texts can vary. Therefore it's important to teach students various components of text structure that can appear in different readings. Teachers should also model the use of these components throughout the year to ensure the students understand what text structure is all about. This can be done through the use of graphic organizers. It will definitely facilitate their comprehension and overall understanding of any text.

Here are 3 lessons that incorporate the use of graphic organizers to aid student's comprehension of informative and/or expository text:
Lesson 1
Lesson 2
Lesson 3
